How We're Stretching

In the yogic tradition, the mastery of intention and attention – referred to as dharana in Sanskrit – is a vital aspect. Without practice, the mind constantly wanders from thought to thought, caught up in its own internal chatter. By refining our intention and attention we can move beyond this turbulence and nurture healing and transformation in our mind and body
As Deepak Chopra explains in this month’s issue, intentions have infinite organizing power. When we are established in restful awareness and have clear intentions, the universe conspires to fulfill our deepest desires. Whether your intention is to heal your body, create more love in your life, or build a business, if you set a focused intention, you will begin to see it actualize in your life.
The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga teaches us to set clear intentions, but at the same time surrender the outcome to nature. You can be assured that when things don’t seem to be going the way you intend them, there is a greater design at work. In your yoga practice, maintain this inner attitude of surrender. As you move through your postures, release your intentions. As well, you can also introduce the mantra that resonates with the Law of Intention and Desire:
Om Ritam Namah
(My intentions and desires are supported by cosmic intelligence.)
Finally, remind yourself to practice present moment awareness in all your actions. As you engage in a yoga pose, bring yourself fully into the present, knowing that being in this very moment empowers your most cherished intentions and desires. Each of your individual intentions do make a difference, and you can contribute to the world through the very personal choices you make each day.
